NOW Inc. (NYSE:DNOW) Analysts Are Reducing Their Forecasts For This Year

Simply Wall St. ·  2020/05/08 10:55

One thing we could say about the analysts on NOW Inc. (NYSE:DNOW) - they aren't optimistic, having just made a major negative revision to their near-term (statutory) forecasts for the organization. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts were both revised downwards, with analysts seeing grey clouds on the horizon.

After the downgrade, the consensus from NOW's ten analysts is for revenues of US$1.8b in 2020, which would reflect a painful 40% decline in sales compared to the last year of performance. Per-share losses are expected to explode, reaching US$3.69 per share. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of US$2.1b and US$0.55 per share in losses. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

The consensus price target fell 5.4% to US$7.72, implicitly signalling that lower earnings per share are a leading indicator for NOW's valuation. That's not the only conclusion we can draw from this data however, as some investors also like to consider the spread in estimates when evaluating analyst price targets. Currently, the most bullish analyst values NOW at US$14.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$5.50. As you can see the range of estimates is wide, with the lowest valuation coming in at less than half the most bullish estimate, suggesting there are some strongly diverging views on how think this business will perform. As a result it might not be possible to derive much meaning from the consensus price target, which is after all just an average of this wide range of estimates.

Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. Over the past five years, revenues have declined around 3.1% annually. Worse, forecasts are essentially predicting the decline to accelerate, with the estimate for a 40% decline in revenue next year. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 4.8% per year. So while a broad number of companies are forecast to decline, unfortunately NOW is expected to see its sales affected worse than other companies in the industry.

The Bottom Line

底線

The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that NOW's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. With a serious cut to this year's expectations and a falling price target, we wouldn't be surprised if investors were becoming wary of NOW.
