TeslaCEO Elon Musk was sarcastic twice on the company's earnings call on MondayapplesOne is about the use of cobalt in apples, and the other is the company's “walled garden” policy.
When asked about Tesla's supply chain, Musk said that there is a misunderstanding in the market that Tesla uses a lot of cobalt. “I think Apple uses close to 100% of cobalt in their batteries, phones, and notebooks, but Tesla doesn't use cobalt in iron phosphate battery packs, and hardly uses cobalt in nickel-based chemicals.”
When talking about opening up charging networks to rivals, Musk slammed Apple's “walled garden” policy. “I think what we really want to emphasize is that our goal is to support the advent of a sustainable energy era, not to build a walled garden and then use it to hit our competitors, as some companies do.” Then he pretended to cough and said “apple.”
The so-called “walled garden” means that Apple strictly controls software that can be installed on iPhones through its app store. The policy is facing scrutiny by US lawmakers and challenges from other companies, including an antitrust trial after Epic Games sued Apple over App Store fees and policies earlier this year.
