CVS Health, the second-largest drugstore operator in the US, announced on Thursday that it had suspended the sale of two sunscreen products under its aloe vera brand after reports that some sunscreen products in the US market contained high levels of benzene, a chemical that can cause leukemia.
A spokesman for CVS said the suspension of the two products was a matter of caution and that the company was working with suppliers of both products to "take appropriate additional steps".
Earlier this weekJohnson & JohnsonThe company announced a recall of five Neutrogena and Aveeno sunscreen sprays from the market because they may contain small amounts of benzene. The company advises consumers to stop using these products immediately and discard them appropriately.
In May, an independent testing laboratory called Valisure announced that it had found that some widely used sunscreens and post-sun products contained up to 6/1000000 benzene. The company submitted a petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recall these products.
