①OpenAI announced the update of ChatGPT Search to enhance users' online shopping experience by providing product recommendations, images, reviews, and direct purchase links; ②This feature is currently available for a limited number of categories including fashion, beauty, housewares, and electronics, and will expand to more commodities in the future.

According to Caixin News on April 29 (Editor: Niu Zhanlin), on Monday local time, the AI company OpenAI announced that it is updating the web search tool ChatGPT Search to improve users' online shopping experience.

When ChatGPT users search for commodities, the Siasun Robot&Automation now provides some recommended products, showcasing images and reviews of those products, along with links through which users can directly purchase the commodities.

OpenAI stated that users can ask very specific questions in natural language and receive customized results. As a new beginning, this feature is currently only available for a few categories of commodities, including fashion, beauty, housewares, and electronics, and will include more categories in the future.

This feature will be integrated into the ChatGPT application on Monday, accessible to everyone, regardless of whether they have an account or use the free or paid version.

Reportedly, shoppers will not be able to check out within ChatGPT; instead, they will be redirected to the merchant's website to complete the Trade. The product recommendations shown to potential shoppers are based on ChatGPT's memory of user preferences, and product reviews extracted from across the Internet, without including advertisements.

A spokesperson from OpenAI stated that the search results are generated based on information provided by third parties, such as prices, product descriptions, and reviews. Currently, the company does not charge fees for purchases made through ChatGPT.

The update of ChatGPT Search is one of the measures taken by OpenAI to compete with Google. OpenAI aims to provide a better and more personalized experience when people find products and information on the Internet. Online shopping is one of Google's most important businesses, but over the years, the presence of the advertising market in Google Search has also led to a decline in the quality of search results.

OpenAI claims that their search function is being used by more and more people, with over 1 billion searches last week.

Previously, OpenAI CEO Altman opposed advertising in ChatGPT, but recently changed his stance, claiming he is willing to accept 'tasteful' ads, which means earning a commission through product recommendations, but will not sell priority display positions in search results.

OpenAI stated that it will soon integrate memory and shopping functions for ChatGPT's Pro and Plus users, which means ChatGPT will refer to users' previous chat records to provide highly personalized commodity recommendations.

Over time, OpenAI is developing ChatGPT into a 'multi-functional application' that not only provides a search engine but also has the features of a voice assistant and video generation, aiming to maintain an advantage in competition. Previously, the AI search startup Perplexity AI had already launched shopping functionality.
