The Five-year Decline in Earnings Might Be Taking Its Toll on Cooper Companies (NASDAQ:COO) Shareholders as Stock Falls 4.4% Over the Past Week

The Cooper Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ:COO) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 14% in the last quarter. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. In that time, it is up 30%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 161%. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for the long term, so spare a thought for those caught in the 19% decline over the last twelve months.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Cooper Companies actually saw its EPS drop 2.0% per year.

So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Therefore, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movements.

In contrast revenue growth of 10% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Cooper Companies is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Cooper Companies had a tough year, with a total loss of 19%, against a market gain of about 11%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 5% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
