The Kanzhun Limited (NASDAQ:BZ) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 3.8% in the last twelve months.
Since its price has surged higher, Kanzhun may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 37.5x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 17x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
Kanzhun certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.
How Is Kanzhun's Growth Trending?
Kanzhun's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 42% last year. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 26% per annum over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 11% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why Kanzhun is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
The strong share price surge has got Kanzhun's P/E rushing to great heights as well. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Kanzhun maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
