With EPS Growth And More, Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) Makes An Interesting Case

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 7 21:48

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Intuitive Surgical's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. We can see that in the last three years Intuitive Surgical grew its EPS by 11% per year. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. The good news is that Intuitive Surgical is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 3.6 percentage points to 28%, over the last year. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.
