The market is still focused on the policy prospects of former USA President Trump.

On Thursday local time, Trump stated that he would fulfill his commitment to impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico on Saturday (February 1), but he is still considering whether to include oil from these countries in the items subject to tariffs.

"We might, or might not (impose tariffs on oil)," Trump said to reporters on Thursday in the Oval Office when discussing tariffs on oil from Canada and Mexico. "We might make a decision tonight."

Trump indicated that his decision would be based on whether the oil prices charged by these two trading partners are fair, and whether both countries are treating us "appropriately." He also mentioned that the level of tariffs "might, or might not increase over time."

Trump has previously threatened to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico to combat immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the USA through these two countries.

Taxing oil products from Canada and Mexico could undermine Trump's promise to reduce overall inflation by lowering energy costs. Trump had vowed to halve energy costs within his first year in office, and tariff-related costs could be passed on to USA consumers in the form of rising RBOB Gasoline prices.

Trump's tariff threats have led investors to flock to the Gold market, pushing gold prices to record highs.

Nitesh Shah, a Commodity Strategist at WisdomTree, stated: "As long as uncertainty remains in the market, gold prices may continue to rise. Currently, the main uncertainty in the market arises from the ambiguity of trade policies—we are still unclear on how these tariffs will be implemented and whether they will affect Global trade."

On Friday, regarding economic data, the Federal Reserve's 'most favored' inflation indicator—the Core PCE Price Index year-on-year is 2.8%, stabilizing at this level for the third consecutive month, in line with market expectations.

The December PCE Price Index met expectations, continuing to maintain relatively moderate growth, which may support further rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in the future.

Data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis shows: the USA's December PCE Price Index increased by 2.6% year-on-year, in line with expectations, with the previous value for November being an increase of 2.4%. The December PCE Price Index rose by 0.3% month-on-month, in line with expectations, with the previous value for November being an increase of 0.1%.

Excluding the more volatile food and Energy, the USA's December Core PCE Price Index increased by 2.8% year-on-year, in line with expectations and previous values. The December Core PCE Price Index rose by 0.2% month-on-month, in line with expectations, with the previous value for November being an increase of 0.1%.

The highly watched Core Services Price excluding housing and Energy rose by 0.3% month-on-month, similar to levels in previous months. The Core Commodity Price, excluding food and Energy, fell by 0.24%, the largest monthly decline in the past year based on unrounded data.
