Toronto-Dominion Bank Group posted higher profit for the fiscal first quarter as net interest income rose.

The Canadian banking and financial-services company posted net income of 2.99 billion Canadian dollars ($2.24 billion), or C$1.61 a share, compared with C$2.41 billion, or C$1.27 a share, for the comparable quarter last year. Adjusted earnings were C$1.66 a share.

Net interest income rose to C$6.3 billion from C$5.86 billion, while noninterest income rose to C$4.31 billion from C$4.14 billion. Noninterest expenses fell to C$5.47 billion from C$5.86 billion.
