As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But if you try your hand at stock picking, you risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term ConnectOne Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ:CNOB) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 42% in three years, versus a market return of about 25%. Furthermore, it's down 19% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

After losing 6.8% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

ConnectOne Bancorp saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 17% per year, over the last three years. This fall in EPS isn't far from the rate of share price decline, which was 17% per year. So it seems like sentiment towards the stock hasn't changed all that much over time. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

ConnectOne Bancorp

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for ConnectOne Bancorp the TSR over the last 3 years was -36%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 23% in the last year, ConnectOne Bancorp shareholders lost 2.2% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.9% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. Importantly, we haven't analysed ConnectOne Bancorp's dividend history. This free visual report on its dividends is a must-read if you're thinking of buying.
