Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said Malaysia aims to develop 'Made by Malaysia' chips and graphics processing units (GPU) within the next five to ten years.

He shared this vision during a fireside chat titled From "Made in Malaysia" to "Made by Malaysia" at the Forum Ekonomi Malaysia (FEM) 2025, emphasising the potential to leverage the downstream sector, beyond just back-end semiconductor manufacturing.

"Then, not only (do) we create a new high-value economic sector that serves our demand, but we can then become a global player because other countries will require data centres as well," Rafizi said.

The Economy Minister also highlighted Malaysia's potential as a global data centre powerhouse, underscoring the government's focus on renewable energy (RE).

He announced that Malaysia is finalising the fifth large-scale solar (LSS5) bidding round, with LSS6 to follow soon. "We should be able to allow renewable energy capacities to be scaled up much faster than what we have ever seen in the past," he added.

Rafizi said the government's long-term approach integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres, aiming to position Malaysia as a key global player in the sector.
