As the U.S. stock market approaches the second-to-last trading day of 2024, the Dow Jones Industrial Average opened lower on Monday, falling as much as 728 points to a low of 42,263 points. The decline then narrowed, closing down 418 points or 1%, at 42,573 points. The S&P 500 Index closed down 63 points or 1.1%, at 5,906 points; the Nasdaq closed down 235 points or 1.2%, at 19,486 points.
Nike (NKE.US) and Boeing (BA.US) each fell more than 2%. The day after the airline accident in South Korea, the same model of Boeing aircraft operated by the involved airline experienced another landing gear failure.
NVIDIA (NVDA.US) will launch the next generation humanoid robotics computer Jetson Thor in the first half of next year. The stock initially fell but then stabilized, closing up 0.3% against the market trend. Investors are taking profits ahead of time, causing many large Technology stocks to decline. Tesla (TSLA.US) denied that it will soon launch the Cybertruck in China, with the stock falling more than 3%. Amazon (AMZN.US), Microsoft (MSFT.US), and Apple (AAPL.US) all fell more than 1%.
