As of the close on the 23rd, the number of rising and falling stocks in the Nikkei average was 183 rising, 40 falling, and 2 unchanged.
Last weekend, the Dow average in the US market closed up 498.02 dollars at 42840.26 dollars, and the Nasdaq closed up 199.83 points at 19572.60 points. Although some high-tech stocks faced selling pressure leading to a decline at the opening, the November personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index suggested progress in inflation control, supporting an upward trend. The Dow average at one point rose over 800 dollars from the previous day; however, due to the overlap of expiration dates for stock index futures, stock index options, and individual stock options resulting in a "triple witching," profit-taking selling was observed, and the possibility of a government shutdown weighed on investor sentiment, causing a slowdown in the afternoon. In contrast to the rise of major stock indices in the US stock market, it started up rebounding at 39040.72 yen, an increase of 338.82 yen from the previous weekend. Some buying was seen, shaped to match the Chicago futures. The signing of the budget proposal by President Biden until mid-March next year also seemed to ease concerns regarding the risk of a government agency shutdown. Although the closing price basis recovered to the 39000 yen level for the first time since December 18, participation decreased due to the Christmas holiday, and the trading volume in the Main Board market remained at around 3.5 trillion yen.
At the close, the Nikkei average rose by 459.44 yen (+1.19%) to 39161.34 yen. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Main Board was 1.7 billion81.48 million shares. The trading value was 3 trillion506.6 billion yen. By Global Sectors, Electricity, Gas, Transportation Equipment, Services, and Banks increased, while only the Marine Shipping, Air Transport, and Iron & Steel sectors declined. The number of rising stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Main Board was 71%, while the number of falling stocks was 24%.
