AZEK Insiders Sold US$10m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
The fact that multiple The AZEK Company Inc. (NYSE:AZEK) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At AZEK
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the CEO, President & Director, Jesse Singh, for US$2.5m worth of shares, at about US$47.42 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$53.16, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 3.2% of Jesse Singh's holding.

Does AZEK Boast High Insider Ownership?
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. AZEK insiders own about US$147m worth of shares (which is 1.9% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded AZEK shares in the last quarter. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of AZEK insider transactions don't fill us with confidence.
