Possible Bearish Signals With M/I Homes Insiders Disposing Stock
Possible Bearish Signals With M/I Homes Insiders Disposing Stock
The fact that multiple M/I Homes, Inc. (NYSE:MHO) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
M/I Homes Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chairman, Robert Schottenstein, for US$4.1m worth of shares, at about US$160 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$156. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Does M/I Homes Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. M/I Homes insiders own about US$90m worth of shares. That equates to 2.1% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
