Investors in Black Hills (NYSE:BKH) Have Unfortunately Lost 1.2% Over the Last Five Years
For many, the main point of investing is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But the main game is to find enough winners to more than offset the losers At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in Black Hills Corporation (NYSE:BKH), since the last five years saw the share price fall 18%. On the other hand, we note it's up 9.4% in about a month. However, this may be a matter of broader market optimism, since stocks are up 7.4% in the same time.
So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Looking back five years, both Black Hills' share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 0.5% per year. This reduction in EPS is less than the 4% annual reduction in the share price. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Black Hills' TSR for the last 5 years was -1.2%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Black Hills provided a TSR of 23% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 0.2% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Black Hills you should be aware of, and 1 of them is significant.
