As of the close on the 29th, the number of advancing and declining stocks in the Nikkei Average was 73 up, 150 down, and 2 unchanged.
The U.S. market was closed yesterday due to the Thanksgiving holiday. In the foreign exchange market, trading of major currencies remained sluggish. The dollar-yen rate showed hesitant gains. After briefly being bought up to 151.77 yen, it later fell to 151.41 yen, closing trading at 151.50 yen.
Although the US market was closed, speculation of a rate hike by the Bank of Japan strengthened as the Tokyo metropolitan area consumer price index announced in the morning exceeded market expectations, causing the dollar to break into the 149 yen range for the first time in a month. Following the appreciation of the yen, the Tokyo market started trading with a selling bias. The Nikkei Average saw moments when it fell below 38,000 yen, but it turned out to be resilient due to the purchase of domestic stocks such as financials, ending the trading day at the 75-day moving average level.
The Nikkei Average at the close was 38,208.03 yen, down 141.03 yen (-0.37%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange main board was 1.6 billion 24.6 million shares. The trading value was 3 trillion 597.3 billion yen. By global sectors, transportation equipment, machinery, precision instruments, electric appliances, and marine shipping dropped, while banks, insurance, textiles & apparels, services, electricity & gas increased. The proportion of rising stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange main board was 40%, while the proportion of declining stocks was 56%.
