Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Universal Electronics Inc.'s (NASDAQ:UEIC) 36% Share Price Surge

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 9 20:05

Universal Electronics Inc. (NASDAQ:UEIC) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 36% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 32% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Universal Electronics' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Consumer Durables industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.8x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Universal Electronics Has Been Performing

Universal Electronics could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

Universal Electronics' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 14%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 38% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 6.5% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 5.0% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that Universal Electronics' P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on while the company is keeping a low profile.

The Key Takeaway

Universal Electronics' stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've seen that Universal Electronics maintains an adequate P/S seeing as its revenue growth figures match the rest of the industry. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenue won't throw up any surprises. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to support the share price at these levels.
