Companies Like Altimmune (NASDAQ:ALT) Are In A Position To Invest In Growth
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. By way of example, Altimmune (NASDAQ:ALT) has seen its share price rise 204% over the last year, delighting many shareholders. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.
So notwithstanding the buoyant share price, we think it's well worth asking whether Altimmune's cash burn is too risky. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.
When Might Altimmune Run Out Of Money?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When Altimmune last reported its June 2024 balance sheet in August 2024, it had zero debt and cash worth US$165m. In the last year, its cash burn was US$71m. Therefore, from June 2024 it had 2.3 years of cash runway. That's decent, giving the company a couple years to develop its business. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is Altimmune's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Whilst it's great to see that Altimmune has already begun generating revenue from operations, last year it only produced US$409k, so we don't think it is generating significant revenue, at this point. As a result, we think it's a bit early to focus on the revenue growth, so we'll limit ourselves to looking at how the cash burn is changing over time. Cash burn was pretty flat over the last year, which suggests that management are holding spending steady while the business advances its strategy. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Hard Would It Be For Altimmune To Raise More Cash For Growth?
While its cash burn is only increasing slightly, Altimmune shareholders should still consider the potential need for further cash, down the track. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$520m, Altimmune's US$71m in cash burn equates to about 14% of its market value. Given that situation, it's fair to say the company wouldn't have much trouble raising more cash for growth, but shareholders would be somewhat diluted.
