National Vision Holdings (NASDAQ:EYE) Shareholders Are up 12% This Past Week, but Still in the Red Over the Last Three Years
It's nice to see the National Vision Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:EYE) share price up 12% in a week. But only the myopic could ignore the astounding decline over three years. To wit, the share price sky-dived 83% in that time. Arguably, the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. Only time will tell if the company can sustain the turnaround. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.
The recent uptick of 12% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
National Vision Holdings saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Extraordinary items contributed to this situation. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. National Vision Holdings shareholders are down 35% for the year, but the market itself is up 33%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 10% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
