Overall, there was a preference for selling. Chicago Nikkei 225 futures settlement price was $195 lower at ¥39,295 compared to Osaka daytime prices.
The US stock market declined. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the trading session with a loss of 91.51 points at 42,141.54, while the Nasdaq ended trading down by 104.82 points at 18,607.93. The decline of the heavy equipment manufacturer, Caterpillar (CAT), weighed on the Dow, resulting in mixed performance after the opening bell. Stronger-than-expected private sector employment data and a robust GDP growth figure for the domestic economy in the July-September quarter fueled market optimism towards a soft landing scenario. However, concerns over rising long-term interest rates and weakness in the semiconductor sector led to a suppression of gains and subsequent deceleration, turning the market downwards towards the end.
In the New York foreign exchange market on the 30th, the dollar-yen rate rose to ¥153.49 before falling back to ¥152.87 and finally closed at ¥153.36. The unexpected acceleration in the US October ADP employment statistics pushed the dollar higher, as it reached its highest level since last July, leading to a dominance of dollar buying following a retracement of rate cut expectations. Subsequently, the preliminary GDP figure for the US July-September quarter decelerated more than expected from the previous period, causing a shift towards dollar selling. However, the existing home sales contract index exceeded expectations, and coupled with the interest rate trends in the UK following the budget proposal, long-term interest rates rose again, halting the decline. The euro-dollar rate fell to $1.0808 before rising to $1.0871 and closing at $1.0858. After the dollar strengthened in response to the US ADP employment data, Germany avoided an unexpected economic downturn, and the October Consumer Price Index accelerated more than expected, in addition to the GDP in the Eurozone surpassing expectations, prompting a euro buyback after the retreat of additional ECB rate cut speculations.
NY Crude Oil futures for December rose (NYMEX Crude Oil December futures closing price: $68.61, up $1.40).
