When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For instance, the price of Boise Cascade Company (NYSE:BCC) stock is up an impressive 284% over the last five years. Unfortunately, though, the stock has dropped 3.6% over a week. However, this might be related to the overall market decline of 0.2% in a week.

In light of the stock dropping 3.6% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last half decade, Boise Cascade became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Boise Cascade's TSR for the last 5 years was 443%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Boise Cascade has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 65% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 40% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Boise Cascade better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Boise Cascade (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
