We're Not Worried About Genius Sports' (NYSE:GENI) Cash Burn

We're Not Worried About Genius Sports' (NYSE:GENI) Cash Burn

我們不擔心Genius Sports(紐交所:GENI)的現金燃燒情況

Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.

So should Genius Sports (NYSE:GENI) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

When Might Genius Sports Run Out Of Money?

You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. Genius Sports has such a small amount of debt that we'll set it aside, and focus on the US$74m in cash it held at June 2024. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$19m. So it had a cash runway of about 3.9 years from June 2024. Notably, however, analysts think that Genius Sports will break even (at a free cash flow level) before then. In that case, it may never reach the end of its cash runway. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Well Is Genius Sports Growing?

Genius Sports managed to reduce its cash burn by 73% over the last twelve months, which suggests it's on the right flight path. Pleasingly, this was achieved with the help of a 21% boost to revenue. It seems to be growing nicely. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

How Easily Can Genius Sports Raise Cash?

We are certainly impressed with the progress Genius Sports has made over the last year, but it is also worth considering how costly it would be if it wanted to raise more cash to fund faster growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.

Genius Sports has a market capitalisation of US$1.6b and burnt through US$19m last year, which is 1.2% of the company's market value. So it could almost certainly just borrow a little to fund another year's growth, or else easily raise the cash by issuing a few shares.

How Risky Is Genius Sports' Cash Burn Situation?

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Genius Sports is burning through its cash. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. Its revenue growth wasn't quite as good, but was still rather encouraging! There's no doubt that shareholders can take a lot of heart from the fact that analysts are forecasting it will reach breakeven before too long. After considering a range of factors in this article, we're pretty relaxed about its cash burn, since the company seems to be in a good position to continue to fund its growth. For us, it's always important to consider risks around cash burn rates. But investors should look at a whole range of factors when researching a new stock. For example, it could be interesting to see how much the Genius Sports CEO receives in total remuneration.
