For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

MercadoLibre's Improving Profits

In the last three years MercadoLibre's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Outstandingly, MercadoLibre's EPS shot from US$15.06 to US$27.60, over the last year. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 83%. Shareholders will be hopeful that this is a sign of the company reaching an inflection point.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note MercadoLibre achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 37% to US$17b. That's a real positive.

Are MercadoLibre Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$106b company like MercadoLibre. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Holding US$94m worth of stock in the company is no laughing matter and insiders will be committed in delivering the best outcomes for shareholders. That's certainly enough to let shareholders know that management will be very focussed on long term growth.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. For companies with market capitalisations over US$8.0b, like MercadoLibre, the median CEO pay is around US$13m.

MercadoLibre offered total compensation worth US$9.6m to its CEO in the year to December 2023. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.
