Unfortunately for some shareholders, the FibroGen, Inc. (NASDAQ:FGEN) share price has dived 27% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 45% share price drop.

FibroGen could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as FibroGen's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 33%. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 6.7% during the coming year according to the dual analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 139%.
With this information, we are not surprised that FibroGen is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On FibroGen's P/S
Shares in FibroGen have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio.
