UniQure (NASDAQ:QURE) Shareholders Are up 28% This Past Week, but Still in the Red Over the Last Five Years

UniQure(納斯達克:QURE)股東本週上漲28%,但在過去五年仍然虧損。

It's nice to see the uniQure N.V. (NASDAQ:QURE) share price up 28% in a week. But will that heal all the wounds inflicted over 5 years of declines? Unlikely. In fact, the share price has tumbled down a mountain to land 87% lower after that period. While the recent increase might be a green shoot, we're certainly hesitant to rejoice. The fundamental business performance will ultimately determine if the turnaround can be sustained. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

While the stock has risen 28% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

Given that uniQure didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last half decade, uniQure saw its revenue increase by 6.9% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. So it is unexpected to see the stock down 13% per year in the last five years. The market can be a harsh master when your company is losing money and revenue growth disappoints.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 32% in the last year, uniQure shareholders lost 14%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 13% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for uniQure you should be aware of, and 1 of them shouldn't be ignored.
