Insiders At Expedia Group Sold US$3.4m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

In the last year, many Expedia Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPE) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Expedia Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chief Legal Officer & Secretary, Robert Dzielak, for US$1.7m worth of shares, at about US$132 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$148). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 12% of Robert Dzielak's holding.

Insiders At Expedia Group Have Sold Stock Recently

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Expedia Group shares. In total, insiders dumped US$2.5m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.

Does Expedia Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Expedia Group insiders own 5.1% of the company, worth about US$963m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
