Prince Holdings Co., Ltd. (President: Hiroyuki Isono, Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) and Toyota Motor East Japan Co., Ltd. (President: Hiroyuki Ishikawa, Headquarters: Kurokawa District, Miyagi Prefecture, hereinafter referred to as TMEJ) announce the installation of components using highly transparent and rigid cellulose nanofiber (CNF) in autonomous driving robots to be exhibited at the Toyota GAZOO Racing Rally Challenge 10th round held on September 29.
We are actively promoting green innovation focusing on the development of renewable wood-derived new materials by sustainably nurturing forests and utilizing forest resources. As one of the pillars, we have been researching and developing CNF, successfully establishing the technology to manufacture the world's first transparent CNF sheets. We have been developing CNF composite materials, combining CNF sheets with polycarbonate resin, aiming for applications in automobile window glass and more.
Using these CNF composite materials, we have produced a canopy for autonomous driving robots at TMEJ. Unlike traditional canopies that are opaque and require reinforcement on the back for rigidity, the canopy made from highly transparent and rigid CNF composite materials achieves a new innovative design that allows visibility of the interior. This advancement eliminates the need for reinforcement parts, contributing to simplifying assembly processes and increasing payload volume. It also leads to lightweighting of the vehicle, which can result in energy efficiency during operation.
We will continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through further expansion of CNF's social implementation.
TMEJ-made, autonomous driving robot canopy crafted.
Polycarbonate combined with CNF transparent sheet.
