Smaller competitor, technology company Change Healthcare, announced on Thursday that customers who had previously switched to Change Healthcare due to the cyber attack on UnitedHealth in February continue to work with the company and have signed a long-term contract.
UnitedHealth, a leading healthcare provider, accounts for only 1% of UnitedHealth's revenue, but handles approximately 50% of medical claims for about 0.9 million doctors, 0.033 million pharmacies, 5,500 hospitals, and 600 laboratories in the United States. According to the company, about one-third of patient records in the United States are processed through Change.
The healthcare industry is no longer dependent on a single supplier. Health technology experts say that the industry is shifting towards multiple suppliers to avoid the risk of failure, and the recent hacker incident has accelerated this process.
