KUALA LUMPUR, 14 SEPTEMBER 2024Hong Leong Bank ("HLB" or "the Bank") today announced that it has enabled its HLB DuitNow QR merchants to accept Weixin Pay (commonly known in Malaysia as "WeChat Pay") via its HLB DuitNow QR, providing an added payment option for Weixin Pay users and especially for tourists from China visiting Malaysia.

This latest development is in line with the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Payments Network Malaysia ("PayNet") and Weixin Pay, allowing Chinese travelers to Malaysia to enjoy a seamless digital payment experience while making payments to merchants across the country. The partnership will also enable all Weixin Pay merchants in its global network to accept payments from Malaysian mobile banking apps and e-wallets supported by PayNet.

With at least 1.47 million tourists from China arriving in Malaysia in 2023, and a target of 5 million set for 2024, enabling Weixin Pay acceptance via HLB DuitNow QR comes at an opportune time to support the recovery of the tourism sector. By accepting Weixin Pay, one of the most popular mobile payment methods in China, merchants can cater to the payment preferences of Chinese tourists, boosting sales and enhancing customer satisfaction.

"We are excited to expand our convenient payment solutions for our merchants," said Andrew Jong, Managing Director, Personal Financial Services at HLB. "Enabling Weixin Pay acceptance through our HLB DuitNow QR not only directly supports the revitalization of our tourism sector, but also reinforces Malaysia's appeal as a top investment, business, and travel choice for China. We remain dedicated to delivering innovative solutions that cater to the ever-changing needs of our customers, ultimately driving growth for the Malaysian economy."

HLB has consistently led the way in facilitating digital payments for Chinese tourists. In 2018, the Bank was the first bank outside of China to provide a mobile application enabling merchants to accept Weixin Pay, streamlining transactions for Chinese travelers. Building on this success, HLB further enhanced its commitment to digital adoption in 2022 with the relaunch of its HLB BizBuddy mobile application. This empowers merchant partners, particularly small and medium-sized businesses, to seamlessly accept DuitNow QR payments, fostering a more inclusive and digitally connected business environment in Malaysia.

To accept Weixin Pay, HLB merchants simply need to display their HLB DuitNow QR code at their point-of-sale. Chinese tourists can then scan the QR code using their WeChat app to complete the payment securely and efficiently. The transaction amount will be automatically converted from Chinese Yuan to Malaysian Ringgit at the prevailing exchange rate.

HLB BizBuddy DuitNow QR merchants are also able to accept QR payments from visitors from Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia. For more information, visit:
