Last week, Appian Corporation (NASDAQ:APPN) insiders, who had purchased shares in the previous 12 months were rewarded handsomely. The shares increased by 11% last week, resulting in a US$246m increase in the company's market worth, implying a 20% gain on their initial purchase. As a result, their original purchase of US$308.0k worth of stock is now worth US$368.2k.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Appian Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Albert Biddle for US$308k worth of shares, at about US$28.02 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$33.47), we still think insider buying is a positive. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Appian insiders own 42% of the company, worth about US$996m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
