We Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC) Passed With Ease

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 16 22:20

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide InterDigital with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

InterDigital's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, InterDigital has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Outstandingly, InterDigital's EPS shot from US$6.33 to US$11.08, over the last year. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 75%. Shareholders will be hopeful that this is a sign of the company reaching an inflection point.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. The good news is that InterDigital is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.5 percentage points to 44%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in our book.

Are InterDigital Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own InterDigital shares worth a considerable sum. With a whopping US$70m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This would indicate that the goals of shareholders and management are one and the same.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but shareholders may be wondering if remuneration policies are in their best interest. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like InterDigital with market caps between US$2.0b and US$6.4b is about US$6.7m.

The InterDigital CEO received US$4.8m in compensation for the year ending December 2023. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Is InterDigital Worth Keeping An Eye On?

InterDigital's earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The drastic earnings growth indicates the business is going from strength to strength. Hopefully a trend that continues well into the future. InterDigital is certainly doing some things right and is well worth investigating. Before you take the next step you should know about the 1 warning sign for InterDigital that we have uncovered.
