Fisco Japan ·  Sep 13 16:07

At the closing on the 17th, the number of rising stocks in the Nikkei average constituents was 60 stocks, the number of falling stocks was 164 stocks, and one stock remained unchanged.

The U.S. stock market continued to rise on the 12th. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 235.06 points (+0.58%) at 41,096.77, the Nasdaq rose 174.15 points (+1.00%) to 17,569.68, and the S&P 500 rose 41.63 points (+0.75%) to 5,595.76. The August Producer Price Index (PPI) exceeded expectations, but the outlook on interest rate cuts remains unchanged. Semiconductor stocks like Nvidia showed strength, leading to an increase after the opening. At the same time, disappointment from those expecting a more gradual rate cut led to a momentary decline, but the market remained firm, supported by the tech sector. Towards the end, buying accelerated on expectations pointed out by The Wall Street Journal for a significant interest rate cut, resulting in a substantial final surge.

Although U.S. stocks rose, the Tokyo market got off to a slow start due to the strong yen. After the opening, the Nikkei average continued to stagnate around the 36,800 yen level, but as the exchange rate entered the 140 yen range for 1 dollar, the yen's appreciation accelerated, causing the Nikkei average to trend weaker. However, despite the accelerated yen appreciation, ahead of the 3-day weekend, cautious sentiment prevailed, which helped avoid a sharp decline in the afternoon. The preliminary settlement index (SQ) value of the September stock options and futures, calculated at the opening, was 36,906.92 yen. As the Nikkei average did not exceed this level during trading hours, it became known as the "phantom SQ".

The Nikkei average at the close was 36,581.76 yen, down 251.51 yen (-0.68%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1.7377 million shares, with a trading value of 4.2172 trillion yen. In terms of industry, rubber products, transportation equipment, pharmaceuticals, insurance, electric and gas industries, etc. declined, while marine transportation, mining, iron and steel, air transportation, machinery, etc. rose. The number of rising stocks accounted for 21% of the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, while the number of falling stocks accounted for 75%.

The top contributor to the decline was First Retail (9983), which pushed down the Nikkei average by about 60 yen with one stock. The second top contributor was Konami G (9766), followed by TDK (6762), SoftBank G (9984), Astellas Pharma (4503), Chugai Pharmaceutical (4519), and Shin-Etsu Chemical (4063), among others.

On the other hand, the top contributor to the rise was Toyo Electric (8035), which pushed up the Nikkei average by about 39 yen with one stock. The second top contributor was Advantest (6857), followed by Nichiden (6988), Fanuc (6954), Shiseido (4911), Disco (6146), and Daiichi Sankyo (4568), among others.
