Cable One Insiders Sold US$4.6m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 10 22:13

Over the past year, many Cable One, Inc. (NYSE:CABO) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Cable One Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Thomas Might, for US$4.5m worth of shares, at about US$553 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$336. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

In total, Cable One insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Cable One insiders own about US$188m worth of shares (which is 9.9% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Do The Cable One Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Cable One shares in the last quarter. While we feel good about high insider ownership of Cable One, we can't say the same about the selling of shares. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Cable One (including 2 which are a bit unpleasant).
