The fact that multiple Algoma Steel Group Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTL) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Algoma Steel Group Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTL)

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Algoma Steel Group

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Independent Director, David Sgro, sold US$1.1m worth of shares at a price of US$7.81 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$10.12, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 19% of David Sgro's holding.

Does Algoma Steel Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

Algoma Steel Group

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 2.6% of Algoma Steel Group shares, worth about US$27m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
