If EPS Growth Is Important To You, Verisk Analytics (NASDAQ:VRSK) Presents An Opportunity

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 25 20:18

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Verisk Analytics (NASDAQ:VRSK). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

Verisk Analytics' Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Verisk Analytics managed to grow EPS by 14% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note Verisk Analytics achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 8.1% to US$2.8b. That's progress.

Are Verisk Analytics Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Investors are always searching for a vote of confidence in the companies they hold and insider buying is one of the key indicators for optimism on the market. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

It's worth noting that there was some insider selling of Verisk Analytics shares last year, worth US$54k. But this is outweighed by the trades from Independent Director Wendy Lane who spent US$158k buying shares, at an average price of around US$264. And that's a reason to be optimistic.

Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Verisk Analytics is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. Given insiders own a significant chunk of shares, currently valued at US$59m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. This should keep them focused on creating long term value for shareholders.

While insiders already own a significant amount of shares, and they have been buying more, the good news for ordinary shareholders does not stop there. The cherry on top is that the CEO, Lee Shavel is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Verisk Analytics, with market caps over US$8.0b, is around US$13m.

Verisk Analytics offered total compensation worth US$10m to its CEO in the year to December 2023. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Does Verisk Analytics Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One positive for Verisk Analytics is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Better yet, insiders are significant shareholders, and have been buying more shares. That should do plenty in prompting budding investors to undertake a bit more research - or even adding the company to their watchlists. Don't forget that there may still be risks.
