Simply Wall St ·  Jul 26 19:44

Over the past year, many Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. (NYSE:CRL) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Corporate Executive VP & Chief People Officer, Victoria Creamer, for US$1.3m worth of shares, at about US$254 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$222. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.
