ADR (American depositary receipt) Japanese stocks fell across the board, including Yucho Bank, Disco, Advantest, SoftBank Group, Tokyo Electron, Oriental Land, Renesas, and others, compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange (1 dollar = 153.69 yen). Chicago Nikkei 225 futures closing price was 38,115 yen, down 1,005 yen from Osaka daytime comparison.
The US stock market continued to decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 504.22 points to 39,853.87, while the Nasdaq fell 654.94 points to 17,342.41. Disappointing earnings reports from some high-tech companies led to selling pressure and declines after the market opened. The world's economic indicators are also weak, and concerns about the economy have spread as domestic new home sales indicators are weak as well, leading to a soft push throughout the day. Even toward the end, stubborn political uncertainties accelerated selling and expanded the decline.
On the foreign exchange market on the 24th, the dollar-yen rate dropped from 154.22 yen to 153.11 yen and closed at 153.98 yen. The yen continued to be bought after reports that the Bank of Japan is considering additional rate hikes and halving bond purchases at its monetary policy meeting next week. In addition, the sale of dollars was boosted by the unexpected drop in the number of new home sales in the United States in June, which factored in the Federal Reserve Board's interest rate cut. Afterward, the results of the 5-year bond auction were weak, and long-term interest rates turned upward, which strengthened the buyback of dollars. The euro to dollar rate rose to 1.0867 dollars and then fell to 1.0837 dollars, closing at 1.0839 dollars.
