Rain AI has hired a chip executive from Apple to lead its hardware engineering. This is the second executive hired by the start-up company this month, which is attempting to design new semiconductors for artificial intelligence.

According to the Zhongtong Finance app, Rain AI has hired a chip executive from Apple (AAPL.US) to lead its hardware engineering. This is the second executive hired by the start-up company this month, which is attempting to design new semiconductors for artificial intelligence.

Jean Didier Allegrucci, who helped oversee the development of Intel's (INTC.US) processors in iPhones and Macs, will now lead Rain AI in developing more energy-efficient chips. He will be working with chief architect Amin Firoozshahian, who joined the start-up after working at Meta (META.US) for five years.

Supported by OpenAI co-founder Altman and Y Combinator, Rain AI, headquartered in San Francisco, is one of the many start-ups that are trying to develop new hardware for artificial intelligence platforms. The company is exploring a technology called memory computing, which imitates the way the human brain works and may save power by processing data where it is stored.

Rain AI, which is researching memory computing, has joined the ranks of Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM.US), and Samsung Electronics (SSNLF.US), but still faces economic and environmental feasibility issues. However, in the long run, more efficient chips are essential for adding artificial intelligence to a wider range of devices.

Rain AI CEO William Passo said in a statement, "Our novel memory computing technology will help unleash the true potential of today's generative artificial intelligence models, bringing us one step closer to running the fastest, cheapest, and most advanced AI models."
