The Market Lifts Sypris Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:SYPR) Shares 46% But It Can Do More

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 15 22:19

Sypris Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:SYPR) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 46% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 4.8% isn't as impressive.

Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Sypris Solutions' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Auto Components industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.7x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Sypris Solutions Has Been Performing

Sypris Solutions has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to only keep up with the broader industry, which has keeping the P/S in line with expectations. Those who are bullish on Sypris Solutions will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Sypris Solutions' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

Sypris Solutions' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 20% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 75% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 8.9% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's curious that Sypris Solutions' P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Sypris Solutions' P/S is back within range of the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We didn't quite envision Sypris Solutions' P/S sitting in line with the wider industry, considering the revenue growth over the last three-year is higher than the current industry outlook. It'd be fair to assume that potential risks the company faces could be the contributing factor to the lower than expected P/S. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.

Having said that, be aware Sypris Solutions is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is potentially serious.
