Generally, when a single insider buys stock, it is usually not a big deal. However, when several insiders are buying, like in the case of New York Community Bancorp, Inc. (NYSE:NYCB), it sends a favourable message to the company's shareholders.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At New York Community Bancorp

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director Peter Schoels bought US$415k worth of shares at a price of US$4.15 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$3.08 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company.
