Enpro Insiders Sold US$1.7m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 9 20:36

The fact that multiple Enpro Inc. (NYSE:NPO) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Enpro

The Executive VP, Robert McLean, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.0m worth of shares at a price of US$159 each. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$149. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

In the last year Enpro insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Enpro Insiders Are Selling The Stock

Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider selling at Enpro. In total, Senior VP Steven Bower sold US$155k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Enpro insiders own about US$22m worth of shares. That equates to 0.7% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Enpro Insiders?

An insider hasn't bought Enpro stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. We're in no rush to buy! Of course, the future is what matters most.
