From what we can see, insiders were net sellers in MaxLinear, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MXL ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders sold the stock in greater numbers than they purchased it.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

MaxLinear Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Director, Theodore Tewksbury, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$235k worth of shares at a price of US$19.57 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$17.30. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Theodore Tewksbury.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. MaxLinear insiders own 8.5% of the company, currently worth about US$120m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
