E-commerce marketplace eBay has launched a new "resell on eBay" feature designed to simplify the process of listing clothing for resale.

This initiative is part of the retailer’s effort to make it easier for brands and buyers to engage in sustainable practices.

The feature will be integrated into Certilogo’s Secure by Design digital ID which can be accessed by scanning a smart label on connected products.

Italian clothing brand Save The Duck is the first to implement this feature in its connected garments in May 2024.

eBay aims to extend the resell service to more brands using Certilogo digital ID, intending to make it a default feature of its Secure by Design technology.

eBay global general manager of fashion Charis Marquez said: “Reducing friction and removing barriers to brands and consumers engaging in recommerce is crucial to fostering a pre-loved fashion marketplace. Our new resell feature helps brands keep their product out of landfill while giving consumers an incredibly easy way to give their item a second life.”

Certilogo CEO and founder Michele Casucci said: “This new ‘resell on eBay’ feature was a natural next step for Certilogo’s innovation and product evolution.

Customers use the service by scanning the QR code on a product’s smart label. The “resell on eBay” button will then be displayed within the digital brand experience.

The innovation follows eBay's 2023 launch of a customised listing flow for sneakers that received positive feedback from sellers.

It launched the listing tool employing AI to extract details from images for listings, enabling sellers to list items and buyers to access more information about products.

eBay acquired Certilogo in July 2023 to improve pre-owned authentication with secure-by-design digital authentication technology – an AI-powered digital ID printed on product tags.

In January 2024, eBay announced almost 1,000 job cuts – 9% of its full-time employees.
