STORY: Ahmed Abu Athab was injured by Israeli fire when he went to the beach with a group of other children.He'd lost his home, like most Gazans, and wanted to wash himself in the sea.A munition landed as they came out on Tuesday (May 28), and shrapnel wounded him.Two days later he was in Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, one of a growing number of wounded stuck in embattled Gaza without medical aid.Israel's attack on Rafah has cut off the main border crossing into Egypt and stopped the trickle of people leaving Gaza for medical help.Ahmed's mother has left Gaza for cancer treatment.His aunt, Jamila, begged world leaders to let him leave too. "He was hit by shrapnel. He said ‘aunt, I was looking for water. I want to bathe. I died, I died.’ Here he is, he needs an operation. There are no capabilities. There are no doctors. There are only a few doctors. Even the doctors, they don’t have any capabilities. Open the borders, let the medicine enter, let the doctors enter, let the ambulances in, let the children leave. Have mercy on us. We are dying in Gaza, we are dying."At al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah, Doctor Khalil al-Dakran said Israel's military campaign had unleashed a medical catastrophe.“All hospitals are struggling due to lack of medicine and medical necessities and fuel. The occupation army continues to insist on targeting all life necessities in the Gaza Strip. We have, in the Gaza Strip, a large number of injuries and patients, more than 20,000 patients and injured need treatment abroad and the occupation army closed the Rafah border and prevented patients to travel. Many of them have died.”Israel blames Egypt for the closure, saying it wants to reopen Rafah to Gazan civilians who wish to flee. Israel's military said on Wednesday (May 29) it had taken control of a buffer zone along the frontier, which gives the country effective authority over the Palestinian territory's entire land border.Egyptian officials and sources say humanitarian operations are at risk from military activity and that Israel needs to hand the crossing back to Palestinians before it starts operating again. Egypt is also worried Palestinians will be displaced from Gaza.As well as blocking patient transfers, Israel's attack on Rafah has all but cut off medical supplies and threatened its last functioning hospital.At a World Health Organization meeting on Wednesday (May 29) more than 30 countries condemned Israel's attacks on hospitals in Gaza and demanded more scrutiny of its role in the enclave's health crisis.

Pharma firm urged to share new 'game-changer' HIV drug
More than 300 politicians, health experts and celebrities called Thursday for US pharmaceutical giant Gilead to allow generic versions of a promising new HIV drug to be produced so it can reach people in developing countries most affected by the deadly disease.The signatories urged Gilead to licence the drug on the United Nations-backed Medicines Patent Pool, which would allow for cheaper generic versions to be manufactured.

Texas Supreme Court rejects challenge to state's abortion law over medical exceptions
The Texas Supreme Court on Friday rejected a closely watched challenge to the state's restrictive abortion ban, ruling against a group of women who had serious pregnancy complications and became the first in the U.S. to testify in court about being denied abortions since Roe v. Wade was overturned. In a unanimous ruling, the all-Republican court upheld the Texas law that opponents say is too vague when it comes to when medically necessary exceptions are allowed. The same issue was at the center of a separate lawsuit brought last year by Kate Cox, a mother of two from Dallas, who sought court permission to obtain an abortion after her fetus developed a fatal condition during a pregnancy that resulted in multiple trips to an emergency room.

Pfizer drug extends life for people with rare form of lung cancer
A Pfizer lung cancer drug has been shown to greatly reduce tumor progression and improve survival outcomes for people in the advanced stages of a rare form of the disease, according to trial results published Friday.Lorlatinib, which is already approved and available under the brand name Lorbrena in the United States, was tested in a clinical trial of hundreds of people with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
