US-based e-commerce company Amazon has expanded its services to South Africa with the launch of a dedicated online shopping platform, Amazon.co.za.

The new site offers South African customers access to a wide range of products across 20 categories, including international and local brands.

The platform, accessible via the Amazon shopping app and desktop and mobile browsers, features international brands such as HP, Apple, Sony and Maybelline alongside South African sellers such as Masodi, Amanda-Jayne and King Kong Leather.

Amazon.co.za offers same-day and next-day delivery options and customers can track their orders via WhatsApp.

The retailer also provides a 30-day return policy with home pickup and self-drop options.

Amazon offers customer service through email, phone and live chat, and its South African customers will enjoy a free delivery service on first orders and subsequent purchases over R500 ($27).

Amazon.co.za offers easy onboarding tools, payment processing solutions and promotional features for independent sellers in South Africa.

The platform is accessible for businesses of all sizes.

Amazon sub-Saharan Africa managing director Robert Koen said: “We are excited to launch Amazon.co.za, along with thousands of independent sellers in South Africa. We provide customers with great value, a broad selection — including international and local products — and a convenient delivery experience.

"From today, customers can count on Amazon.co.za for a stress-free shopping experience, fast and reliable delivery, access to 3,000 pickup points, 24/7 customer support and easy returns."

Amazon has also partnered with local non-profit organisation goGOGOgo, enabling customers to receive eligible products in handmade gift bags.

Based in Johannesburg, goGOGOgo focuses on building the skills, knowledge and capacity of grandmothers, locally known as GOGOs.

In April 2024 Amazon announced its intention to launch a drone delivery service in Arizona, US later in the year.
