The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From CITIC Securities Company Limited's (SHSE:600030) Earnings Yet

Simply Wall St ·  May 3 08:56

CITIC Securities Company Limited's (SHSE:600030) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 32x and even P/E's above 60x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

CITIC Securities could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For CITIC Securities?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as CITIC Securities' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 9.3% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 24% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that CITIC Securities' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From CITIC Securities' P/E?

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of CITIC Securities' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
