This week we saw the Deluxe Family Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600503) share price climb by 12%. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. After all, the share price is down 43% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

While the share price declined over five years, Deluxe Family actually managed to increase EPS by an average of 24% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Because of the sharp contrast between the EPS growth rate and the share price growth, we're inclined to look to other metrics to understand the changing market sentiment around the stock.

We don't think that the 0.2% is big factor in the share price, since it's quite small, as dividends go. It could be that the revenue decline of 32% per year is viewed as evidence that Deluxe Family is shrinking. This has probably encouraged some shareholders to sell down the stock.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 13% in the twelve months, Deluxe Family shareholders did even worse, losing 19% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 7% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Deluxe Family better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 1 warning sign for Deluxe Family that you should be aware of.
