From what we can see, insiders were net sellers in Discover Financial Services' (NYSE:DFS ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders sold the stock in greater numbers than they purchased it.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Discover Financial Services Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Executive VP & CFO, John Greene, sold US$3.7m worth of shares at a price of US$107 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$126, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was 99% of John Greene's stake. John Greene was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Insider Ownership Of Discover Financial Services

Discover

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Discover Financial Services insiders own 0.5% of the company, currently worth about US$163m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
