Investors Aren't Buying Ichor Holdings, Ltd.'s (NASDAQ:ICHR) Revenues

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 19 19:17

With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.5x Ichor Holdings, Ltd. (NASDAQ:ICHR) may be sending very bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Semiconductor companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.1x and even P/S higher than 10x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Ichor Holdings Performed Recently?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Ichor Holdings' revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Ichor Holdings?

Ichor Holdings' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 37%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 11% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 4.1% during the coming year according to the five analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 46% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Ichor Holdings' P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Ichor Holdings' P/S

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Ichor Holdings maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
